Fail to Correctly Install a Downloaded Gadget

If a downloaded Windows Vista gadget is not installed correctly on the system, it may not display in the Windows Sidebar as expected.

Cause of the Problem

You encounter this problem when the “ .gadget” file name extension is not associated correctly with the Windows Sidebar program.

Resolution Steps

To resolve this problem, you need to associate the “.gadget” file name extension with the Windows Sidebar program, by performing the steps listed below:

  1. Open Start menu, in the Start Search box, type default program and then press Enter.

    This will display the Default Programs item in Control Panel.

  2. Select the Associate a file type or protocol with a program link.
  3. In the Name column, select the .gadget checkbox, and then select the Change program button located at the top of the dialog box.
  4. Next, use one of the following methods:

    • In the Recommended Programs section, select Windows Sidebar, and then select the OK button.
    • Click the Browse button, double-click Windows Sidebar, select sidebar, click Open, and then select the OK button.
