How to Fix Internet Explorer Installation Issues

Error messages similar to the one given below may be displayed on your screen, soon after the Window Internet Explorer 7 installation wizard finishes, due to one of the following reasons:

  • The setup program is unable to update the registry due to restrictive permissions on some of the required registry subkeys and computer files.
  • Some other problem on the PC is preventing your system from trusting the installation package of Internet Explorer 7.

Internet Explorer 7 could not be installed. You must restart your system to confirm that any changes to your system are undone.

After you restart, follow the "Internet Explorer Troubleshooting" shortcut on your desktop to get more information.

Warning: The troubleshooting methods discussed below require you to work with the Windows registry. You must be very careful while editing the registry because there is no undo option in Registry Editor and any mistakes in registry edits may render your PC unbootable. This is the reason why, it is recommended that you back up the registry before you make any edits to it.

Depending on the cause, you can resolve the problem, by performing the steps listed in one of the following methods.

Method 1: Disable antivirus and antispyware tools

The restrictive policies of certain antivirus and antispyware programs may prevent successful installation of Internet Explorer 7 on the system. Therefore, before starting the installation, disable these programs.

After disabling, start Internet Explorer 7 installation again and once it completes successfully, re-enable your antivirus and antispyware tools.

Method 2: Verify and if required, set required registry permissions

Step 1: Determine the problem that might be preventing registry updates during Internet Explorer 7 installation.

  1. Open the Start menu, select Run, in the Open box, type %windir%\ie7.log and then click the OK button.
  2. In the ie7.log file that opens, perform a search for IECUSTOM: Key is still unwriteable entry—you can open the search box, either by pressing the Ctrl + F keys or by selecting the Find command from the Edit menu.

If during the search you find "Key is still unwriteable" text in the ie7.log file, it indicates restrictive problems in the registry that are preventing it from getting updated when you try to install Internet Explorer 7 on your PC. When you find the key, you will see a text similar to the following in the log file.

TimeStamp : IECUSTOM: Key is still unwriteable registrySubKey

If you find this text, then it indicates that the Internet Explorer 7 installation problems are being caused by the mentioned registrySubKey.

Note : If you do not find this entry, proceed to Method 3.

Step 2: Reset the incorrect permissions of the detected registry key

  • Open the Start menu, select Run, in the Open box, type regedit and then click the OK button.
  • In the Registry Editor window that opens, locate the registry key that you detected as being behind the problem, right-click on it, and then select the Permissions command.

Important Registry Acronyms

The following are important registry acronyms that will help you interpret registry subkey displayed in the ie7.log file and locate it in the Registry Editor window.

HKCR - HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT

HKLM - HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE

HKCU - HKEY_CURRENT_USER

  • In the Group or user names section, select the Administrators option.
  • Next, ensure that the Allow check box is selected for the Full Control and Read entries in the Permissions to Administrators section.

Note : If the Deny check boxes are selected, clear them and select the Allow check boxes.

  • Apply your changes and exist the permissions dialog box.
  • Repeat the steps if multiple keys where reported in the ie7.log file.
  • After you are finished with resetting the permissions, exit the Registry Editor window, and try to install Internet Explorer on your PC again.

Method 3: Find out the file that failed to get backed up or updated

The installation of Internet Explorer 7 may fail if the setup is unable to back up or update old files. To check if this is the problem, perform the following steps:

  1. Open ie7.log file by running the %windir%\ie7.log command (Start > Run).
  2. Perform a search for ArchiveFileForUninstall:ArchiveSingleFile Cancelled text—you can open the search box, either by pressing the Ctrl + F keys or by selecting the Find command from the Edit menu.

If you find entries such as the one listed below it indicates that there exists a problem that is preventing one or more Internet Explorer 6 files, that is currently installed on your system, from being saved for uninstallation.

    Timestamp: ArchiveFileForUninstall:ArchiveSingleFile Cancelled
    Timestamp : DoInstallation:UpdSpCommitFileQueue for AlwaysQueue Failed: 0x4c7
  3. If you find these entries, open Start menu and select Run.

Now, depending on your operating system, type in one of the following commands and select the OK button.

    On Windows XP:

    echo y| cacls "%CommonProgramFiles%\Microsoft Shared\VGX\vgx.dll" /P BUILTIN\Users:R "BUILTIN\Power Users:C" BUILTIN\Administrators:F "NT AUTHORITY\SYSTEM:F"

    On Windows Server 2003:

    echo y| cacls "%CommonProgramFiles%\Microsoft Shared\VGX\vgx.dll" /P BUILTIN\Users:R "BUILTIN\Power Users:C" BUILTIN\Administrators:F "NT AUTHORITY\SYSTEM:F" "NT AUTHORITY\TERMINAL SERVER USER:C"
  4. Try to run the Internet Explorer 7 installation again.

If none of the above methods rectify the error, then it is quite likely that the Internet Explorer installation package with you is corrupt. In this case, download it again from

following Microsoft website and then run the installation again.
