Error: MAPI32.DLL is Corrupt or the Wrong Version

When you attempt to launch the Microsoft Office Outlook 2003 program, it may fail to start and display the following error message on the screen:

Cannot start Microsoft Office Outlook. MAPI32.DLL is corrupt or the wrong version. This could have been caused by installing other messaging software. Please reinstall Outlook.

Cause of the Error

This issue usually occurs after you install and then uninstall Microsoft Office Outlook 2007 Beta 2 on a system that already has Outlook 2003 on it. When Outlook 2007 Beta 2 is uninstalled, the uninstallation process fails to remove the MSMapi32.dll file that is by default located in the C:\Program Files\Common Files\System\Msmapi\Locale_ID folder.

Note: Local_ID represents the language of the program. The Local_ID for English – the United States is 1033.

 Resolution Steps

To resolve the error, perform the following steps:

  1. Open the Windows Explorer window and navigate to the C:\Program Files\Common Files\System\Msmapi\1033 folder.
  2. Locate the MSMapi32.dll file, right-click on it, and then select the Rename command.
  3. Type Msmapi32.bak, and then press the Enter key to rename the file.

Note: The MSMapi32.dll file you are repairing in this step is different from the Mapi32.dll file mentioned in the error message.
  4. Start Outlook 2003.

Outlook 2003 will now automatically repair the error.
