Problems with Outlook Calendar and Task Reminders

You may encounter problems with Outlook Calendar and Task Reminders when they are not displayed at the time they are scheduled for and also, the following error message may be displayed, when you click on Save and Close for a new appointment with a reminder:

The reminder for <reminder_ subje ct> may not appear because the item is not in your Calendar or Tasks folder. Is this OK? <yes> <no>

Cause of the Problem

This problem may occur, when:

  • Microsoft Outlook program is not running on your computer. This is because, unlike other programs, such as Microsoft Schedule+ that have a separate file to handle reminders, reminders in Outlook are handled by the main Outlook program. This is the reason why, if the Outlook program is not running on your computer, your reminders will not display.
  • The Calendar or Task reminders are not stored in the primary folder. The folder in which you receive your e-mail messages is the primary folder. Usually, when you set your Outlook, you either configure the Inbox or a personal folder (.pst) as the delivery point for your e-mails. So, if you have your mails being delivered to the Inbox in your personal (.pst) folder but have your calendar set in the Calendar mailbox, the reminders will not display. However, if you have the reminders set in the Calendar that is in your Personal Folder, the reminders will display.

Note: In Microsoft Office 2007, reminders are generated from other Calendar and Task folders.
  • The setting of the Delivery option of your e-mail service is None. To be able to receive reminders, you need to specify a default location to process the reminders.
  • The folder in which Reminders are stored either comprises corrupt reminders or is damaged.

Resolution Methods

Depending on the cause, you can resolve the problem by performing one of the following tasks.

  • In case, the problem occurs because Outlook is not running, then launch it either by double-clicking on its icon on Desktop or by selecting its command option from the Start menu.
  • If you are creating a new reminder, ensure that it is being saved in the primary Calendar or Task folder of your Outlook.
  • To remove corrupt reminders, close windows related to Microsoft Outlook, open Start menu, select Run, type outlook /cleanreminders and then select the OK button.
  • If the /cleanreminders switch command does not work, close Outlook and run the outlook /resetfolders to repair the folder in which the reminders are stored.
