Problems with Outlook 98 After Active Setup

You may encounter the following problems with your Outlook 98 after you run Microsoft Active Setup on your Windows 98, Windows 98 Second Edition, or Windows ME computer:
  • Outlook 98 hangs and stops responding.
  • Kernel32.dll invalid page fault error is displayed.
  • Invalid page fault is displayed for an <unknown> module.
  • When you acknowledge the error message Outlook 98 closes.
  • Error messages are displayed when you try to add components.
  • Even if you specify Setup to run from a CD, Setup attempts to perform a Web installation.

Cause of the Errors

When you encounter these error messages and problems, it indicates that the current Outlook 98 installation on your system is either incomplete or is damaged.
This behavior usually occurs due to the following reasons:
  • When you perform Outlook 98 Active Setup, an antivirus program was running on the computer.
  • When you installed Outlook 98, you where logged on your Windows 98, Windows 98 SE or Windows ME computer with a Widows 2000 user profile that did not have the required rights to the system.
  • When you launched Outlook 98 for the first time, you ran it in the same profile in which you installed it.
  • When installation was done, other software programs running on the system where using the same system resources that the Outlook 98 Active Setup required to use.
  • The Internet Zone Security is configured at the highest level.
  • Information written in the Setup log files is not accurate.
  • If performed the installation from the web, it is possible that the downloaded files were damaged.

Resolution Steps

To resolve the Outlook 98 Active Setup perform the following steps:
Warning: The steps discussed here require you to work with the Windows registry. You must be very careful while editing the registry because there is no undo option in Registry Editor and any mistakes in registry edits may render your PC unbootable. This is the reason why, it is recommended that you back up the registry before you make any edits to it
Step1: Close Error Message boxes, Disable Automatic Startup of Programs at Windows Startup
  1. Click the Cancel button to close all error message boxes.
  2. Close all programs that are currently running on the computer.
  3. Open Start menu, select Run, type msconfig, and then press Enter.
  4. On the Startup tab, first note down the check boxes not selected and then clear the check boxes of all other programs in the list.
  5. Select OK and then select Yes to restart you Windows computer.
  6. Next, either disable automatic startup of your antivirus programs or uninstall it by using the Add/Remove Programs option in the Control Panel. Note: In case, you are forced to uninstall the antivirus program, reinstall it after these resolution steps are done.  
  7. Restart you computer, and then press the CTRL+ALT+DELETE key combination to ensure that only Internet Explorer and Systray programs are running on the system.

Step 2: Make changes in the registry
  1. Open Start menu, select Run, type regedit, and then press Enter.
  2. Navigate to the following registry key:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Active Setup
  1. On the Registry menu, select Export Registry File.
  2. In the File name box, type Activesetup.bak, and then select Save to export the selected key to the location specified in the Save In box.
  3. After exporting, right-click the key and then select Delete.
  4. Next, repeat steps 2 to 5 for the following registry key:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Active Setup
Step 3: Rename the Active Setup Log Files
  1. Select Start, point to Search, and then select theFor Files or Folders command.
  2. Search for and rename the following files:
    • Active Setup.log to Active Setup.old
    • Active Setup Log.txt to Active Setup Log.txt

Step 4: Run the Outlook 98 Active Setup Again
  • loadTOCNode(2, 'moreinformation'); Open Control Panel, from the Settings submenu in the Start menu.
  • Double-click Add/Remove Programs .
  • Select Microsoft Outlook 98, and then select Add/Remove.
  • Select Rerun Outlook 98 Setup, and then follow the Setup Wizard instructions to rerun the setup.
  • When prompted to prevent overwriting of new file versions used by other programs on the system, select Install only newer components .
  • After the setup completes, r estart your computer.
  • Launch Outlook 98 to ensure that it runs without any errors.

Note : In case, you receive error during setup skip Step 5 and proceed to Step 6.
Step 5: Re-enable Automatic Startup Programs
Run the loadTOCNode(2, 'moreinformation'); msconfig again and then on the Startup tab select the check boxes you cleared in Step 1.
Note : Do not select the check boxes that were not selected earlier.
Step 6: Perform this step if your issues are still not resolved or Outlook is giving problems during setup and startup.
  • On the Desktop, right-click the Internet Explorer icon, and then select Properties.
  • On the General tab, select the Delete Files button in the Temporary Internet Files section, and then select the OK button.
  • On the Programs tab, select the Internet Explorer should check to see whether it is the default browser check box.
  • On the Security tab, in the Internet zone section, set the security level to Low.

Note : You can change the setting back to the current (higher level) after the resolution procedure is complete.  
  • Select Apply save your changes and thenOK to exit the dialog box.
  • Next, search for the following files and rename their extensions to .old:
    • Active Setup.log
    • Active Setup Log.txt
    • Acmeeng.inf
    • Advpack.dll
    • Outsetup.inf
    • Jobexec.dll
    • Inseng.dll
    • Mapi.dll
    • Mapi32.dll
    • Mapisp32.exe
  • Search for and delete the folders if you find them:
    • Acme000
    • Acme001
    • Ixp000.tmp
  • Open Registry Editor, navigate to the following registry keys, export them and then delete them:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Active Setup HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Active Setup
  • Ensure that you have at least 120 MB of free space on the C drive. You can check this by write clicking on C: in the My Compute

Step 7: Repair Internet Explorer

Perform the following steps if you think Outlook 98 installation installed Internet Explorer 4 over Internet Explorer 5.01, Internet Explorer 5.01 Service Pack 1 (SP1), or Internet Explorer 5.5 installation.
On Windows 98
  • Open Control Panel and then double-click Add/Remove Programs.
  • Select the Microsoft Internet Explorer 5 and Internet Tools option and then Select Repair Internet Explorer.
  • Select Yes to restart your system.

On Windows 98 SE and Windows ME
  • Open Start menu, and then select Run.
  • In the Open box, type the command given below, and press Enter.

rundll32 setupwbv.dll,IE5Maintenance "C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\Setup\SETUP.EXE" /g "C:\WINDOWS\IE Uninstall Log.Txt"
Note: Type the command as given because it is case-sensitive.  
    • Vredir Error Messages with Exception 0E

The following error messages may be displayed on a blue screen when you try to open multiple files that are stored on a shared network folder. When the error display, you may unable to use your computer normally. Moreover, you may encounter more error messages when you try to continue working on the system.

????????. This was called from 0028:C0034184 in VxD IFSMGR(01) +
00001094. It may be possible to continue normally.

Note : These error messages apply only if no Ifsmgr.vxd file updates have been applied to your computer.

Cause of the Error

This problem occurs when you repeatedly attempt to open and close files using identical share modes. When this happens, Vredir.vxd or the redirector file loses the track internal file tracking structure. As a result, the Vredir.vxd file incorrectly schedules system event to close and deallocate already processed file structures.

Resolution Method
