Method 8: Update Removal Process

Problems with Windows Installer may occur on a Windows XP computer soon after you install Service Pack 2 if the following conditions are true:

  • You have certain specific filter drivers, such as the Ibmfilter.sys driver on your computer.
  • You are attempting to install certain updates/hotfixes on your computer to resolve some specific computer problems.

Resolution Method

You can resolve this problem by performing the following steps:

  1. Restart your computer.
  2. Open Start menu, select Run, type appwiz.cpl, and then click the OK button.
  3. Select the Show Updates
  4. Select the Show updates check box located at the top of the Add or Remove Programs dialog box.
  5. Scroll down, locate and select the update that caused your Windows to stop responding during installation.
  6. Next, click the Remove button to start the update removal process.
  7. After, the removal is complete, restart your computer, click the link given below and then from the Web site that opens, download the update required to resolve the error:

  8. Install this update and restart your computer.
  9. Now, install the update that you could not install earlier.
