Error: Server Not Responding

The following error message may be displayed on your screen when you try to log on to Windows Messenger:

Server Not Responding

Cause of the Error

This error usually occurs due problems in the client configuration or network connection. Due to these problems, your Windows Messenger fails to connect to the Messenger Service and displays the error.

Workaround Method

First click the link given below to open the Microsoft Web site that enables you to check your .NET Service status:

http://status.messenger.msn.com/Status.aspx?product=wm

If all systems are shown as stable and running, use one of the workaround method discussed to diagnose and troubleshoot the problem:

Method 1: When you are on a home network.

When you are on a home network, ensure that:

  • All network cables are plugged in and properly seated in their sockets.
  • All network devices, such as cable or DSL routers, hubs, and residential firewall devices are powered on and are working properly.
  • Internet programs, such as your Web browsers and e-mail application are working properly.

Method 2: When you are on a corporate network.

On corporate network, do the following:

  • A corporate network is usually managed and controlled by one or more network administrators. This is the reason why, if you are unable to connect to the Windows Messenger service on a corporate network, you must contact your network administrator to find whether or not the service is enabled for you.
  • If the service is enabled for you then check if your network uses Microsoft Proxy Server 2.0 or Internet Security and Acceleration Server to share the Internet Connection service over the network. If this is so, ensure that the Winsock Proxy Client version 2.0 or the ISA Firewall Client are properly installed on your computer. To do this, perform the following steps:
    • Open the Start menu, point to Settings, and then select the Control Panel command.
    • In the Control Panel window, search for the WSP Client icon or the Microsoft Firewall Client icon and double-click on it.
    • Select the Enable check box to enable the client.
  • If instead of a Winsock Proxy, your network is using an HTTP proxy, ensure that connection settings of your Windows Messenger are correct. To do this, perform the following steps:
    • In the Windows Messenger window, open the Tools menu, and then select the Options command.
    • On the Connection tab, select the I use a proxy server check box.
    • Select the HTTP Proxy option from the Type list.
    • Finally, specify the name or address and port of your HTTP Proxy server in the Server and Port boxes and then select the OK button to save your changes and close the Options dialog box.
