Unable to Use Windows Messenger 5.0 to Transfer files from a Multihomed Computer to another Computer

You may fail to transfer files from Windows Messenger 5.0 to another Windows Messenger user. However, you may have no problem in transferring files from other Windows Messenger versions.

Cause of the Error

This problem occurs, when one or both of the following conditions is true:

  • Your computer is multihomed—has multiple network adapters installed on it.
  • The network adapter installed on your computer has multiple network adapter bindings.

In this situation, Windows Messenger 5.0 is unable to determine the correct IP address in use and sends wrong IP address to the remote Windows Messenger client. This is the reason why the remote client fails to make a connection and retrieve the file.

Resolution Steps

Microsoft has identified this problem and have rectified it in the latest Windows Messenger version. This is the reason why, to resolve this problem, you need to install the latest Windows Messenger version on your computer.
