How to Submit Microsoft False-Positive Files and Folders Identified as Malware

After you install Windows Live OneCare on your computer, the application may identify certain files and software to be infected with a virus or a spyware program. However, at times, you may be sure that these files are not infected and have been falsely detected as being virus/spyware infected. In this case, you can submit these false-positive files or software to Microsoft.

To compress and archive false-positive files and submit them to Microsoft, perform the steps listed below:

  1. Open Windows Explorer, right-click in a blank area on an open folder, select New, and then select the Compressed (zipped) Folder command.
  2. Type the name for your zip folder as fp-virus.zip and then press Enter.
  3. Navigate to the location where the detected false-positive files are located, and then drag them to the fp-virus.zip folder.
  4. Next, double-click on the fp-virus.zip folder to open it, open File menu, and then select Add a Password.
  5. Type infected in the Password box that is displayed.
  6. Type infected in the Confirm Password box.
  7. Open your e-mail program.
  8. Compose a new e-mail, in the To line type the e-mail address as onecare@submit.microsoft.com.
  9. Type the subject as False Positive: Virus.
  10. In the message body, include the following details:
    • Why do you think that the file(s) are not virus/spyware infected?
    • Results of any other application and the name of the application you used to ensure that the file(s) are not infected.
    • Information about the source from where you downloaded the file.
  11. Finally, attach the fp-virus.zip file to your message and send it to Microsoft.
