Windows Live OneCare Firewall fails to start

If after Windows Live OneCare installation the Windows Live OneCare Firewall fails to start, the following may occur:

  • A message will be displayed asking you to start the firewall.
  • You may not be able to access or change the firewall settings.
  • An error message may be displayed informing you that the firewall service could not start or that you cannot change the firewall settings at this time.

Cause of the Error

This problem may occur, due to following reasons:

  • Firewall is disabled.
  • Firewall is not installed correctly.

Resolution Steps

Step1: Ensure that the Windows Live OneCare Firewall is configured to start automatically.

  1. Open Control Panel, select Performance and Maintenance, select Administrative Tools and then select Services, or open Start menu, select Run, type services.msc , and then press Enter.

    Note : In Windows Vista, type services.msc in the Start Search box and then press Enter. Next, if prompted, provide the administrative user password.
  2. In the Services window, double-click on OneCare Firewall to display its properties box.
  3. On the General tab, select Automatic from the Startup type list.
  4. Ensure that the Service status is Started, if it is not click on the Start button to start the service.

If the issue does not resolve, proceed to the next step.

Step 2: Uninstall and Reinstall Windows Live OneCare

  1. Open Control Panel and select the Add or Remove Programs link, or open Start menu, select Run, type appwiz.cpl , and then press Enter.

    Note : In Windows Vista, type Appwiz.cpl in the Start Search box and then select, Appwiz.cpl from the Programs list.
  2. In the Currently installed programs list, search for and select Windows Live OneCare.
  3. Click the Change/Remove button to uninstall the tool.

Step 3: (Optional) Run the Windows Live OneCare Cleanup tool

To ensure complete Windows Live OneCare removal, download the Run the Windows Live OneCare Cleanup tool from the following Web site and then run it on the system.

Step 4: Reinstall Windows Live OneCare

If required, download Windows Live OneCare tool from the following Web site and then reinstall it on your computer:
