Unable to Share Files with DRM Devices Post Windows Media Player 11 Installation

In order to access shared media content, you are required to establish sharing relationships between Window Media Connect and your Digital Media Receiver (DMR) devices, such as Xbox 360. This relationship may fail and you may encounter problem while working with your DMR devices, when you upgrade to Windows Media Player 11. This problem occurs because Window Media Connect functionality has been incorporated within Media Player 11. This is the reason why, when you upgrade to Media Player 11, Windows Media Connect Version 1 and Windows Media Connect Version 2 are automatically upgraded.

However, in the process some of the old Windows Media Connect settings are not migrated to Media Player 11, and thus, may generate problems when you try to work with DMR devices associated with them.

You can fix this issue by recreating the sharing relationships between your system and the DMR device after upgrading to Media Player 11. After the sharing relationship is reestablished, you can again start streaming audio, video, and images from your system to DMR devices.

To recreate new sharing relationship in Media Player 11, you need to perform the following steps.

Step 1: Using the options available in Media Player 11, select the device with which you want to share media

If you are starting the process of the installing or upgrading your Media Player, then follow the steps listed below to migrate your sharing relationships too.

  1. During the upgrade or installation, when the Windows Media Connect Upgrade dialog box is displayed, select Yes.
  2. In the Media Sharing dialog box that is displayed, ensure that Share my media check box is selected.
  3. Next, in the devices list, select the device with which you want to share media and then select Allow.

This will display all devices that were earlier available to Window Media Connect.

In case, you have already upgraded or installed Media Player 11, then perform the steps listed below to reestablish the relationship.

  1. Launch your Windows Media Player application.
  2. Open the Library tab, select its down-arrow, and then select the Media Sharing command.
  3. In the Media Sharing dialog box that is displayed, ensure that Share my media check box is selected.
  4. Next, in the devices list, select the device with which you want to share media and then select Allow.

This will display all devices that were earlier available to Window Media Connect.

Step 2: Reconfigure your DMR device to start playing the media shared from your system

  1. Use the options available in your DMR device to select the Windows Media Player library on which the shared media exists. This library is displayed as YourComputerName : MediaLibraryName. Where, YourComputerName is the name of your system that contains the Media Player library, and MediaLibraryName is usually same as the user account name of your Windows system.
  2. From your device, browse through and select the media you want to play.

Note: It is recommended that you thoroughly go through the documentation that comes with your DMR device to get acquainted with how various settings are performed on your device.
