Problems While Loading Windows Portable Device Driver

You may be unable to connect to the Windows Mobile Device Center and encounter the red X error icon, if the Windows Portable Device driver fails to load. To resolve this problem, perform the following steps:

  1. Connect your mobile device to your computer.
  2. Open Start menu, select Run, type sysdm.cpl, and press Enter.
  3. On the Hardware tab, click on the Device Manager button.
  4. In the Device Manager window, search for and expand the Portable Devices node.
  5. Search for the Windows Mobile device entry, right-click and then select Properties.
  6. On the Driver tab, select Uninstall.
  7. Disconnect and reconnect your device to reinstall the driver.

After the driver is reinstalled, you should be able to connect to the Windows Mobile Device Center.
