Unable to Connect Motorola Q Phone to Windows Vista Using Bluetooth

You may encounter problems while connecting Motorola Q to a Windows XP or Windows Vista computer because Motorola Q uses the Broadcom Bluetooth stack, which has a fundamental issue that prevents the connection.

To resolve this issue, perform the steps listed below:

Warning: The steps discussed below require you to work with the Windows registry. You must be very careful while editing the registry because there is no undo option in Registry Editor and any mistakes in registry edits may render your PC unbootable. This is the reason why, it is recommended that you back up the registry before you make any edits to it.

  1. Open Start menu, select Run, type regedit, and press Enter.
  2. In the Registry Editor window, navigate to the following registry key:

    HKLM\software\Microsoft\Windows CE Services

    Here, change the value for SerialPort from Bluetooth to COM3 (or whichever option you want to mention.
  3. Restart your system and then connect Motorola Q device.

If the above steps, do not resolve the issue, proceed with the following steps:

  1. On your Motorola Q device, open Settings, and then select the Bluetooth On and Allow other BT devices to see this phone checkboxes.
  2. On the computer, open Control Panel, select Bluetooth Devices and then on the Options tab select the following check boxes:
    1. Turn discovery on
    2. Allow Bluetooth devices to connect to this computer
  3. On the Devices tab, click the Add button.
  4. In the Add Bluetooth Device Wizard, select the My device is set up and ready to be found check box, and then click the Next button.

    Your computer will now search for new devices in the range and after discovering your Motorola Q, it will display it as a discovered Bluetooth device on the screen.

  5. Next, you will have to enter a passkey for the Motorola Q device. This passkey is code that is required to control device access and helps improve security.

    After you enter the passkey, you computer will try to connect to your device and verify the passkey.

  6. Now, on your Motorola Q device a prompt may display asking you to enter the passkey. For this, enter the passkey you added on your system and select Accept when the Accept all connections from this device message is displayed.

    After the passkey is verified the connection is complete.
  7. On your system, you may receive a message informing you about Incoming COM port #, the new device will be installed, when the installation is complete, click Finish.
  8. Open Registry Editor again, and navigate to the following key:

    HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows CE Services

    And make the following changes:

    SerialPort=COM5, SerialBaudRate=dword:0001c200
  9. Open Command Prompt and run the following commands:

    net stop wcescomm
    net start wcescomm
  10. On your Motorola Q device, open Menu, select Connect via Bluetooth and then in the Bluetooth Manager, select Add, select Search and then select your computer.
