alcxmntr.exe - Realtek AC97 Audio Event Monitor

The alcxmntr.exe program, which is usually found in the windows or system32 folder on a PC's system, or C drive, provides the "Realtek AC97 Audio Event Monitor" service. The "mntr" component of the name provides a hint that it's a "monitoring" application. If your PC is running this process, then its hardware configuration includes an audio device that makes use of a chipset from Realtek Semiconductor Corporation.

A few spyware websites seem to classify this process as a suspicious one, but most treat it as a legitimate system file that should not be deleted or altered. It can be disabled if it's suspected as the cause of system errors or crashes, but otherwise should be benign. Reports indicate a few users have reported problems due to the presence of a running alcxmntr.exe. Others have said that disabling the process causes problems with audio playback. This process manages events on the audio channel. It may transmit performance data back to the manufacturer, which is why some reports classify it as spyware. No further data is available.

If you find this process running on your PC and are certain you don't have a Realtek-based audio advice, it's probably a good idea to track down the file's location. Use the built-in Windows "search for files or folders" feature to scan your drives for the location of the alcxmntr.exe file. If it's in an unusual location (outside the C:\windows or C:\winnt directory tree) then you should treat it as an infection and scan your machine fully for malware/spyware infestation.

It may turn out to be a benign file - maybe your PC's manufacturer shipped it and other Realtek drivers as part of a default installation - but it's worth checking just to be sure. Also note that the mere presence of the file on your machine probably isn't a cause for panic. You only need to worry if you find a running process using the Windows Task Manager, and your system does not include a Realtek audio device.
