Kernel32.dll - Memory Management

Kernel32.dll is the Windows base API DLL, which means it's the dynamic load library (DLL) that handles memory management tasks, input/output operations, and interrupts. When Windows boots, kernel32.dll is loaded into a protected memory space so other applications do not take that space over.

This is a required, mandatory Windows component. Attempting to manipulate or disable it in any way may result in an unbootable or unstable system.

Occasionally users may see errors that are described as "invalid page faults." This means that a program or application attempted to access kernel32.dll's protected memory space. It does not mean that a virus or other malware application is present, but rather that the application contains a defect in its architecture. User level processes should not attempt to access protected memory. If this error is seen consistently with a specific single application, then the application should be upgraded to a more recent version or removed from the system altogether. If the error is generated by more than one application on your system, it may mean a hardware problem exists. In this case, obtain and run a good set of diagnostic tools that are capable of locating hardware-related problems.

Note that the legitimate Windows file makes use of the .dll extension. Many reports have been received involving viruses and other malware masquerading as this file. The name kernel32.dll is valid, but neither "kernel32.exe" (note the ".exe" extension) nor kernell32.dll (note the 2nd "l") are legitimate. Also remember that machines running 64-bit Windows will not use the kernel32.dll file; instead they'll use kernel64.dll.

As always, if you suspect a malware infestation you should download and run a current copy of an antivirus/malware scanner in order to isolate and remove the offending application. Be sure to obtain the most recent definition files, since these are critical to the removal of current malware variants.
