slwinact.exe - Licensing Related Process
The slwinact.exe process was introduced in Microsoft Windows Vista. This exact function of this process is presently unknown. It appears to be related to the Windows Activation (licensing) subsystem, but very little additional information is available at this time. This process and its associated executable file will not be found on earlier versions of Windows.
Since it may be related to licensing, terminating or altering this process is not suggested unless users suspect a running slwinact.exe is degrading system performance. If this is found to be the case, contact Microsoft Support for additional information and troubleshooting assistance. Be prepared with exact diagnostic information, such as your Windows patch level, hardware configuration, and the behavior noted.
Slwinact.exe is a legitimate file when distributed as part of the Windows OS. It appears to be located in the standard C:\windows\system32 directory on default Vista distributions. Copies found in other locations on disk should be treated with caution, but no reports of viruses hijacking this file name have yet been reported.
As always, if you suspect a malware infestation you should download and run a current copy of an antivirus/malware scanner in order to isolate and remove the offending application. Be sure to obtain the most recent definition files, since these are critical to the removal of current malware variants.
