Unable to Update Windows Defender on Windows Vista
An error message similar to one given below may be displayed when you try to update the Windows Defender utility on your Windows Vista PC.
Error found: Code 0x80240029
This error occurs when the SoftwareDistribution folder on your Windows Vista computer is corrupt.
Steps to Resolve Windows Defender Update Error
You can resolve the error by performing the steps listed in one of the following two methods:
Method 1: Rename the SoftwareDistribution folder
- Close all program windows open on your system.
- Open Start menu, in the Start Search box type Run, and then press Enter.
- To open the System Configuration Utility dialog box, type msconfig and select OK.
- Open the BOOT tab, select the following checkboxes and select OK.
- Safe boot
- Minimal
- When prompted restart the computer.
- Open Start menu, in the Start Search box type %windir%, and press Enter to open the Windows system folder (By default C:\Windows).
- Locate the SoftwareDistribution folder, right-click on it, and then select Rename.
- Give a new name to the folder, for example SoftwareDistribution.bak and then press Enter.
- Finally, restart your PC and update the Windows Defender tool.
Method 2:
- Close all program windows open on your system.
- Open Start menu, select Search, type Services, and then double-click on Services to display the Services list.
- On the list, locate and right-click on the Windows Management Instrumentation and select Stop.
- Open Windows Explorer, locate the Repository folder in C:\Windows\System32\wbem and delete it.
- Finally, restart the Windows Management Instrumentation service from the Services window, close all programs and restart your PC.
You must now be able to update Windows Defender.
